Antennas Made of Wires
Volume 1 & 2

(A posthumous publication release)

Plus 103 Example Working Antenna Modeling Files

numerous articles and books have described various wire antenna designs, but here is a series of new books from the works of antenna master, L.B. Cebik, W4RNL (SK). He is known the world over or his unique ideas about new ways to "bend wires" to get the most out of them. With LB’s guidance, your success is practically guaranteed. It would be a rare occasion indeed that any design recommended by this author will not work as described. One can proceed with that confidence in mind.

VOLUME 1
This 535-page Volume 1 book is available now and is dedicated to the design, construction and use of antennas of various types of wire. The reader can save a lot of time and effort by reading these books. Then, experiment to your heart's content with an aim toward the goal of achieving the best signal for your unique environment.

VOLUME 2
Volume 2 with its 616 pages of content picks up where Volume 1 leaves off. Many more designs are presented of greater complexity, yet still easy to build again using the wires stipulated by LB. The designs are well-described and explained with 100s of drawings, parameter tables and performances modeled using NEC and EZNEC software. One may use the models to fit their own situation as may be influenced by the various unique environments applicable.

With wire, antennas are very simple and easy to build at a very lowest of cost to achieve one’s goal. This book will demonstrate a number of designs from conventional antenna wisdom. How satisfying is it to twist and bend wires together and make connections only to suddenly discover, it’s not just wires anymore, it’s an antenna!

One book is not enough to describe all of the best-known designs, but we begin with Volume 1 starting with some of the most simple and popular designs and gradually progress toward the more complex in Volume 2. See the Indexes below for the types of designs considered in these 2 volumes.

Along with some recommended wires, a pair of gloves and simple hand tools, wonders will sprout from your efforts quickly. And, with wires, such designs can be made to fit within the closest of environments. Many tips are suggested about how to make cramped spaces an asset rather than a liability—and keep your neighbors friendly as well.

We know the reader, newbie or advanced, will learn much and enjoy this book by one of the masters having fun in the process!.

Wire Arrays: 103 Models

Models are available to order separately as written by LB from his own collection as a  companion to the above books, perhaps more so to Volume 2 with its coverage of wire array antenna designs. As LB states, these models are for study purposes and can be helpful in following some of the wire designs in these books. Just load them up and play with the parameters to suit.

103 Models - Wire Arrays (103 in NEC and 103 in EZNEC formats)
The collection of wire models covers chiefly 1.8 MHz through 14 MHz, with a few models for the upper HF range. Models are in both the .EZ (EZNEC) format and in the .NEC format for use with NEC-Win Plus/Pro and generic NEC-2/-4 cores. The EZNEC-format models use a wide variety of dimensional units, but the .NEC-format models are virtually all metric. The filenames are roughly descriptive of the kind of antenna, the frequency band, and any features that discriminate between models of the same general kind and frequency. As well, models with a known designer identify the person in the filename.

The collection of wire arrays covers perhaps the widest territory of any of these collections, since there are collinear, end-fire, and broadside arrays. Hence, you will find extended double Zepps, 8JKs, and lazy-Hs among the offerings, along with many other variations on each of them. The collection also includes some wire Yagis apt for development in the low HF range. As well, you will find loops oriented both vertically and horizontally. Indeed, the collection is a mixture of antennas with predominantly horizontal and predominantly vertical radiation. For example, you will find rectangles, double rectangles, hentennas, half-squares, and bobtail curtains for the vertical radiation aficionado. Among the larger arrays are collinear extended double Zepps, Sterba curtains, and Bruce arrays. In addition, there are a number of wire loops potentially usable on several bands. The collection even includes a few long wires, Vee-beams, a rhombic, and some challenging NVIS arrays.

Virtually all of the antennas use either AWG #12 or AWG #14 copper wire as the main ingredient. As with any model in any collection, you may change the wire size and other dimensions to perfect a design more suitable to your circumstances. No collection can be complete in every aspect, but this set of wire arrays may provide a basis for your own development work.

Although many of the designs may be directly built from the models in this collection, the models themselves are for study purposes. Perfecting the design to a level that permits construction of an antenna that is both electrically and mechanically sound is your responsibility. — L. B. Cebik, W4RNL

The Author
Considered an expert on antennas, LB has published 30+ books with works on antennas for both the beginner and the advanced student. Among his books are two tutorials in the use of NEC antenna modeling software and compilations of his many shorter pieces and some 800 modeling files, all of which are available here in the Shopping Shack. His articles have appeared in virtually every amateur radio publication, with translations of some into several languages. He is a retired Professor from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and holds a PhD in Philosophy. Until his death in April 2008, LB was Technical & Educational Advisor to the ARRL and for 10 years was Technical Editor for antenneX. His contribution of articles to antenneX first appeared in early 1997 and a new monthly column, Antenna Modeling, appeared starting in 1999. He is greatly missed, but antenneX is pleased to be able to bring more of LB's contributions to those who seek to learn about the field of antennas.
